Pre-Treatment Considerations for Cosmetic Tattoo Clients
1. General Health & Suitability
Clients should inform you if they have any of the following:
-
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
-
History of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
-
Autoimmune conditions
-
Diabetes (may affect healing)
-
Blood disorders or use of blood thinners
-
Active skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis) near treatment area
-
Recent illness, infection, or compromised immune system
👉 A doctor’s clearance may be required in some cases.
2. Medications & Substances to Avoid
To reduce bleeding, sensitivity, and poor pigment retention:
Avoid 24–48 hours prior:
-
Alcohol
-
Caffeine
-
Ibuprofen, aspirin, and anti-inflammatory medications
-
Recreational drugs
Avoid 1–2 weeks prior (if possible):
-
Fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba
-
Retinol or vitamin A products near the area
-
Chemical peels or exfoliating treatments
3. Skin Preparation
-
Keep the area clean, hydrated, and free from irritation
-
Avoid sunburn, tanning, or solarium exposure for at least 1–2 weeks prior
-
No waxing, tinting, or threading 2–3 days before (for brows)
-
Avoid lash extensions or lifts close to eyeliner procedures
4. Previous Cosmetic Procedures
Clients should disclose if they’ve had:
-
Previous tattooing or microblading
-
Laser removal or lightening
-
Botox or fillers
Timing guidelines:
-
Botox/fillers: wait at least 2 weeks before or after
-
Laser treatments: wait 4–6 weeks
-
Previous tattoo: may require a consultation for correction work
5. Cold Sores (Lip Tattoo Clients)
-
Clients prone to cold sores (Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1) should take antiviral medication (e.g., Valacyclovir) as prescribed by their doctor before and after treatment
-
Tattooing can trigger an outbreak
6. Day of Appointment
-
Eat a full meal beforehand (helps prevent dizziness)
-
Stay hydrated
-
Arrive with clean skin (no makeup on treatment area)
-
Avoid heavy workouts immediately before
7. Pain & Sensitivity Expectations
-
Mild discomfort is normal; numbing agents are used
-
Sensitivity varies depending on the area and individual pain tolerance
8. Healing & Downtime Awareness
Clients should understand:
-
Initial color will appear darker and soften over 7–14 days
-
Mild swelling, redness, and flaking are normal
-
A follow-up touch-up is typically required after 4–8 weeks
9. When to Reschedule
Clients should postpone if they have:
-
Fever, cold, or flu symptoms
-
Open wounds, acne, or irritation in the area
-
Recent sunburn
10. Consent & Expectations
-
Results vary based on skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare
-
Cosmetic tattooing is a multi-step process, not a one-time treatment
-
Clients should have realistic expectations about shape, colour, and longevity
